Italy's Earthquake

The 6.3 magnitude quake struck at 3:32 a.m. local time near L'Aquila, a city of 70,000 east of Rome.
In addition, as many as 50,000 of the province's 300,000 people may now be homeless, according to Italian Civil Protection Agency figures cited.

The quake hit about 70 miles northeast of Rome in the mountainous Abruzzo region, and has damaged homes, hospitals and several churches dating back as far as the 13th century.
Firefighters, aided by dogs, worked to rescue people from fallen buildings. Rescuers were attempting to reach a half-dozen university students thought trapped in a student dormitory in L'Aquila, the Associated Press reported. The town of Castelnuovo also appeared hard hit, accounting for five fatalities.
