What are landmines?
One of the mot harmful and lasting effects in Afghanistan are landmines and unexploded bombs. Landmines are weapons buried in the ground or covered with dirt, sand and plants. Also landmines explode only if there is weight or pressure on top of it. When landmines explode humans can possibly get injured or killed.
Why are landmines used?
Countries at war use landmines to restrict the movement civilians. Most often civilians are the ones harmed by landmines. In 1999 between 600 to 720 Afghans were killed or injured each month because landmines. By 2000, this figure had dropped to 88 Afghans per month, but this is still too many.
